Ozempic is a prescription medication that is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. One of the side effects of Ozempic is weight loss, which has led to its use as a weight loss drug in some cases. It has also been marketed as “Wegovy,” which has the same active ingredient (semaglutide) as Ozempic. However, even though both Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, only Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss. Taking Ozempic or Wegovy for weight loss should only be done under close supervision of your healthcare provider.
There is some evidence to suggest that Ozempic and Wegovy may be an effective weight loss treatment for people with obesity or overweight, especially when used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise program. Studies with Ozempic have shown that it can lead to significant weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and other health benefits.
While Ozempic or Wegovy may be effective for weight loss in some cases, it is not appropriate or safe for everyone. Both of these medications can cause side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. Neither drug should be taken if someone has a history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
As a plastic surgeon, I can report that other side effects of Ozempic and Wegovy weight loss patients include a deflated and more saggy appearance to the face (“Ozempic Face”) or increased droop of breasts and body (“Ozempic Body”). “Ozempic face” can be improved with injectable fillers and possibly a facelift (mini or full). “Ozempic body” can be improved with breast augmentation (with implants for fat grafting) and possibly breast lift and tummy tucks.
