What Does Otoplasty Involve?

Anesthesia: The patient will be given either local or general anesthesia depending on the decision of the surgeon.
Incision: Incisions for otoplasty as normally performed at the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, non removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.
Closing the incisions: Stitches on the surface close the incision. Techniques may be different depending on the surgeon performing the procedure, but care is taken not to distort other structures in the face and head as well as to avoid an unnatural “pinned back” appearance.

For cases of protruding ears, otoplasty provides near immediate results. With the ear permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either tucked unnoticeably behind the ear or hidden in the ear’s natural creases.

Children who are:

5 years old or older so that the cartilage is stable enough
Healthy and do not have life-threatening illness or chronic ear infections
Cooperative and follow instructions

Adults and teenagers who are:

Nonsmokers
Healthy and do not have life-threatening medical conditions that could affect healing
Cooperative and follow instructions
